Retired Greyhound Trust featured on Daybreak Posted by: Mark Wilson

Some of you may have seen the item about the Retired Greyhound Trust and the research carried out between it and coach operator Greyhound UK featured on Daybreak on the 17th of February, the below text from the email that details what's been going on during the 17th to highlight giving Retired Racing Greyhounds a home.

"We are delighted to say that the Retired Greyhound Trust and Greyhound adoption has been featured on ITV’s Daybreak and Sky News this morning. There will also be interviews with Olympic athlete Iwan Thomas on BBC WM, BBC Radio Solent, Insight Radio in Jersey, BBC Radio Cumbria and Sky Sports Radio throughout the morning.

Some dogs are featured on the Daybreak website – see link below. Just click on it to get through to the website. Thank you to everyone who provided pictures for me. Unfortunately, they have not used every picture I sent over, but they have given RGT and Greyhounds a great spread on their home page and on a page dedicated to the story.

http://www.itv.com/daybreak/lifestyle/petsandanimals/giveaGreyhoundahome/

Please see the press release and a temporary picture attached. A picture of Iwan Thomas will be taken at lunchtime today and sent over later for you to use.

We will send over the interviews on Sky and Daybreak when they are featured in archives later today or tomorrow.
"

Although the two Greyhound pictures we submitted as part of this news item were not selected for the page linked to above, one of Greyhoundhomers dogs was used on the front page of the Daybreak website, see screen grab below. The dog in question is No Joke Pluto (Pluto), and they've made a mirror of the original picture to link to the above article. Unusual Valentines Day Pet Stories Sought Posted by: Mark Wilson

If anyone submits a story to Catherine, please copying in Pat on your message, pat@Greyhoundhomer.co.uk

Eastnews Press Agency Limited
267 Straight Road, Colchester, Essex, CO3 9EQ

Hello,

With St Valentine's Day just around the corner it would be great to hear from you if you've got any animal love stories - it could be:

  • Any unusual friendship like a Greyhound which snuggles up with a rabbit or surrogate mums who have taken on off-spring of different species.

  • An animal which loves doing something a bit out of the ordinary like a parrot which likes to sing Cheryl Cole's latest hits

  • Perhaps an enduring love story like two tortoises who have been together for 50 years and may have to be parted unless you can get them a loving new home together

  • Are you holding a romantic event like speed dating to try and find your animals their perfect new home?

  • Or maybe your supporters have gone to extreme lengths to show their love for your animals - like hand rearing a baby mouse or knitting a jumper for a bald duck to keep it cosy

If you think you've got anything which might be of interest to the national newspapers - it doesn't have to be Valentine's related - please drop me an email at essexnewsandpictures@yahoo.co.uk

Thanks and best wishes

A great start to 2011 Posted by: Mark Wilson

I think it would be fair to say that we've had a great start to 2011 with 17 dogs having been homed already. We've released our Winter 2011 newsletter, and have a great quiz night lined up for the 5th of February. January seems to have flown by, but I for one am pleased we've not had any snow! We've already got some events booked for 2011, including the Essex Country Show, the Essex Young Farmers Country Show and our own Greyhoundhomer RGT Retired Greyhound Show is set for Saturday the 25th of June. More events will be added in due course.

Mark has made some adjustments to the website and forum for 2011, the forum is now more 'Greyhoundhomer' branded and the website should function better with non-Microsoft web browsers.

A rescue dog with halitosis who gargles daily to keep his breath fresh is looking for a new owner.

Tommy the Greyhound has been overlooked by more than 300 new owners because of his chronic bad breath, which he developed due to an immune system problem.

A course of steroids did not help but now a daily gargle with specialist dog mouthwash has cured Tommy's embarrassing problem and he's hoping his winning smile will attract a new owner.

RGT & Greyhoundhomer Ultimate Dog Coat Competition 2011 Posted by: Mark Wilson

Greyhoundhomer RGT & the Retired Greyhound Trust search for the Ultimate Dog Coat will return for its third year.

The hunt for a young fashion designer to help the Retired Greyhound Trust create the 'Ultimate Dog Coat' will be officially launched in April.

Again, the winning creation will be transformed into a real coat and paraded at the Trust's annual show - the Great Greyhound Gathering - at Nottingham Race Course in September.

The competition will be open to two age groups - six and under and seven to 11. We will have regional winners in each age group. The overall winner's design will become the Ultimate Dog Coat 2011. The closing date for entries will be Friday the 15th of July 2011, this is two weeks before the close of the main RGT competition and will allow Greyhoundhomer RGT to choose a winner amongst the entries from it's owners children, we will then pass all these onto RGT head office for judging in the national competition.

Ivor Stocker, from the Retired Greyhound Trust, said: "The Ultimate Dog Coat competition is going from strength to strength so we had to bring it back for its third year. Get your neighbours, friends, families, schools, and Brownie, Rainbow and Cub packs involved and let's make this the best year yet."

Pat Philpot, from Greyhoundhomer RGT, said: "We had many great entries last year, and last year one of the entries won an RGT regional prize. We're hoping for some great entries this year, and maybe we'll have a regional or overall winner!"

To download an entry form for the childrens Ultimate Coat competition click here, to view the RGTs Terms and Conditions for this competition please click here.

Give the Grown Ups a Go!
The Retired Greyhound Trust has decided that it shouldn't be the kids who have all the fun. The Ultimate Dog Coat competition has a new category - for adults. If you are aged 18 or over you can borrow the children's colouring pens and create your own masterpiece. Download an entry form here and get colouring. Entries close on Friday the 15th of July. Just like with the childrens entries, Greyhoundhomer RGT will choose a winner from the entries it receives from it's over 18 owners.

Good Luck!

All entries should be sent to:

We're entering what looks to be a busy show season and we'd like to say thanks in advance to all those who come and help \ support us at these events, without your help these shows would be really hard to attend.

Retired Greyhound Trust Press Release Posted by: Mark Wilson

1 June 2011

Canal Challenge Raises Money for Charity

A Surrey couple who navigated over 50 miles and 90 locks in 24 hours along Birmingham’s canals have raised more than £2,000 for their favourite charity.

Sue and Richard Nosek, in their narrow boat Indigo Dream, have raised the cash for Greyhoundhomer Essex, which is a branch of the Retired Greyhound Trust and homes retired Greyhounds at the end of their racing careers.

The couple and their support crew, made up of experienced boating friends and FOUR retired Greyhounds, navigated through 93 locks as part of the Birmingham Canal Navigations Marathon Challenge last weekend. The marathon challenge is organized by the Birmingham Canal Navigations Society, a charity dedicated to conserving, improving, and encouraging a wide range of interests in Birmingham’s 100 mile canal.

Pat Philpot, from Greyhoundhomer Essex, which homes Greyhounds across the county and has kennels in Ockendon, said: “This is a huge sum of money for our charity and we want to say a big thank you to Sue, Richard and their team for all of their efforts. It was not an easy feat navigating all of those locks in just 24 hours. This is a massive boost for our charity.”

“The donation will be used to pay for kennels, vet fees and food for our Greyhounds until we can find them homes and there are many who do need loving new homes. Anyone who is considering a pet dog, we would urge them to consider a retired Greyhound. They are great with children, they make excellent companions for the elderly and they are extremely loyal and loving pets,” she added.

Richard and Sue, who own three retired Greyhounds said: “The Birmingham Canal Navigation Challenge is a totally bonkers event where you try and get round as much of the Birmingham Canal system as you can in 24 hours - points are gained for miles cruised and locks done, with bonus points bonus points available for cruising more obscure sections and for answering ‘treasure hunt’ style questions along the way. It has been an amazing experience and doing it for a good cause has added a whole dimension of pleasure and excitement to the venture.”

You can sponsor Richard and Sue by logging on to www.mycharitypage.com/indigodream.

If you would like more information on adopting a retired Greyhound, please contact Greyhoundhomer, tel: 01708 551 689.

Notes to editors
The charity has housed more than 50,000 dogs since it was set up in 1975. Around 9,000 Greyhounds retire from racing each year.

The Retired Greyhound Trust has 72 branches across the country made up of volunteers who are dedicated to finding homes for the dogs in their areas. Many have websites, showing pictures of the dogs that need homes.

Some of you may remember a dog called Lemon who was with Elaine awaiting a new home for a long time, but due to some health issues and age he was often overlooked and so Elaine decided to add him to her own number, he had already been living in her house for some time. Well sadly Lemon had to be put to sleep on Monday the 8th of August due to bone cancer. Elaine added, 'A dear friend who is gone forever may he rest in peace.'

August is here and we're pushing on through 2011 at what appears to be an alarming rate. It's been a rather slow year all round, and despite attending many shows and generating significant funds and interest from the events we've attended we've not seen as many dogs go home this year as last.

We seen a fair number of returns this year, most of whom have already been rehomed, returns can be for many different reasons, but the key point is that every dog we home can come back to a safe location for rehoming if it's owner feels that it's place is no longer with them, whatever the reason.

We attended a new event in July, Henfest 2011 near Chelmsford. This turned out to be a lovely day and it was great to see so many of you turn out in support.

Late summer sees pick up in enquiries Posted by: Mark Wilson

After what has been a touch year for rehoming we have finally seen a pick up in enquiries in late summer. There are quite a few dogs reserved awaiting to go home after their new owners have returned from holiday. This years late events have been very positive and although some haven't raised huge some of money they have resulted directly in a number of homings' which is what it's all about. So we're now heading towards Autumn and Winter, let's hope it's a milder one than last year.

Late summer sees pick up in enquiries Posted by: Mark Wilson

October starts us off with 'Indian Summer' conditions, a bit too warm for some I should imagine. There's been a pick up in enquiries following each of the events we've attended towards the end of this year, which has a seen a small flurry of dogs going home. We also have alot of dogs (as opposed to bitches) awaiting their turn to go home, throughout this year there has been a lack of bitches available to us.

There's some new products included in the shop, including the RGTs new Christmas cards for 2011. There are also some new Velvet Collars and some new collar designs from the RGT.

One of our owners called Richard is undertaking a sponsored cycle ride for us on the 22nd of October. He will be travelling from Chalkwell to West Mersea and back, a journey which he estimates will take him about 7 hours. If you would like to sponsor Richard, please use our Charity Choice page.

Pat & Mary at the House of Commons Posted by: Mark Wilson

On Wednesday the 2nd of November Pat and Mary were invited to an event organised by MP and RGT supporter Andrew Rosindell at the House of Commons. This bought together many of those involved in the RGTs nationwide activities including the Chairman, Trustees, the PR team and some major Greyhound owners and track owners were also present. Pat & Mary were there to represent the rehoming part of the RGT activities, and it provided a great opportunity to obtain some new contacts and branch specific supporters.

Pat and Mary would like to thank Peter Laurie, Amanda and the Trustees for making them feel so welcome.

Homings slow a little, and some returns Posted by: Mark Wilson

Firstly can we say a big thank you to all those who helped out at the Apple Day in October, this event was affected by a number of staff and helpers suffering from ill health, Dick had an eye infection meaning Pat was unable to give the event her full support, Andrew Isaac was recovering from a small operation and was landed with a cold at the same time and Alan Homer was having problems with a knee. So again a big thank you to all those who were able to step in a lend a hand!

Homings have slowed a little now, which is mainly due to the limited events we have to attend, during December homings will be limited as usual because we want to be sure that a dog isn't just going home as a Christmas present.

We've also had a couple of dogs returned who had both been with us a long time and in and out of a few homes Lethal Danny (Danny) and Dainty Sheila (Sheila) are back in Elaines kennel unfortunately. Both are lovely dogs and are house trained, so if you think either of them might be right for you why not give them a try out at Elaines kennels.

Have a great Christmas & New Year Posted by: Mark Wilson

Firstly can we say a big thank you to all those who've taken on one or more of our Greyhounds this year, your support is very much appreciated. It's been a hard year which has seen patches of slow homing activity and there have been periods of ill health. At time of writing we've sent home 166 Greyhounds which although down on last year is a great achievement given the economic climate.

I'd like to thank all those who have supported our branch throughout this year, be it turning out to events we attend, supporting us with raffle prizes, taking part in sponsored events or by simply making one or more donations. Thank you all very much!

So it only leaves me to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year!
