Ilford HP5+ 400asa 35mm - 36 exp
- Brand: Unbranded
Description
Ilford does not list any grain size or image resolution measurements for HP5+ though I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s identical to Tri-X’s RMS 17. That about wraps things up for the comparison of the “standard” film offerings from Ilford, but there are also some additional specialty films such as Ilford SFX 200 and Ilford Ortho Plus 80.

It boasts exceptionally fine grain, outstanding resolution and sharpness, and is best suited for bright conditions and sunny days. I’ve been shooting HP5+ for a while and found that I prefer it to TriX a lot due to its more muted contrast at box speed. Only shot the kodak one at box speed but I was getting too much of that ‘crazy contrast’, I don’t think hp5 gets there even at 1600 with somewhat aggressive agitation. The first few rolls completely blew my mind – which I think is a matter for a separate article. I was impressed but the real question was could I expose it at higher EIs and still get good results? The majority of our films break down into 2 distinct lines: The PLUS films (FP4 PLUS, HP5 PLUS and PAN F PLUS,) and the DELTA PROFESSIONAL films (DELTA 100, DELTA 400 and DELTA 3200). Film Type: The ‘type’ of film you need will be determined by the camera that you are using. We have created a short animation which explains the different types of film you can buy - 35mm, 120 roll or sheet film (sheet film is available in different sizes). Please note not every ILFORD PHOTO film is available in all of these formats.High-acutance developers do not have any solvent in them, so they render solid, sharp grains on your film. Rodinal is a classic developer. It’s the oldest film developer that’s still in production. And it has generations of users who sing its praises. If you’re shooting film, you probably want to see some of those grains, anyway. So why not use a developer that can get the most out of your image. I’ve mainly shot this film at box speed (setting my light meter to ISO 400), but as you can see from the examples below, this results in a lot of mid tones, which may or may not be your thing. Ilford, a Harman Technology brand was founded in Alfred Hugh Harman ’s basement in 1879 — just 52 years after the first photograph was produced. It was then named Britannia Works ; however, Alfred lost the rights to label his products with that name in a lawsuit. And so in February 1886, he rebranded his photosensitive materials in Ilford, after his hometown.

Another useful technique is to agitate twice less in the last third of your development time – say, if I develop for 10 minutes, during the last three minutes I would agitate only once a minute. It is a commonly known technique to reduce the grain, and it works extremely well – even for box speed processing. The HP line welcomed a newcomer in 1965: HP4. Initially available in 120 and 127 formats, HP4 was joined by 400 ASA 35mm rolls a year later. Both HP3 and HP4 were available concurrently until late December 1969 when a staged discontinuation of HP3 began. There’s a branding reason Ilford uses Plus or “+” in their emulsions’ names. HP5+ is grouped with FP4+ (est. 1935) and Pan F+ (est. 1948) in the Plus range of films. Films in Ilford’s Plus range are all the latest generations of “established” emulsions in ISOs 400, 125, and 50. Push the film, even a little, and things start getting interesting. Push the film a lot and you’ll bunch up that dynamic range into a narrower band. You’ll enjoy excellent isolation of the higher-end of your mid-tones and brilliant whites. In this review, I’ll share my tips and impressions after four years with HP5+. But first, let me introduce you to this film’s rich history and its impressive specs: A brief history of Ilford and HP5+. This was the film for photojournalism, which was what attracted me in the 1980’s. A gritty dramatic sport like rugby looked better on Tri-X. Ilford is one of the very biggest names in the world of analogue photography, with some of its films being among the best-known and most-loved out there.
