This newest installment of Keating’s “The World of Weird Animals” continues the winning formula of Pink Is for Blobfish and What Makes A Monster? I appreciated the suggestions at the back regarding the "Science of Cute" (think big eyes, rounded faces, etc. The second edition is a paper back, and contains many of the photos of the original (but in much higher quality), plus many new pictures and photos. I have yet to read this text, but from what I have heard, it is very good, if dated (I am unsure if the 1994 edition brings the species and the rest of the text up to date). Related species are noted and sometimes pictured, and there are images and brief descriptions of more “weird animals” at the end of each book.

This is a hefty/heavy hardback book that makes Petranka's book seem like "light" reading (light as in light as a paperback in comparison). Griffiths, instead, prefers to compare and contrast throughout the book, which works reasonably well. Finally, the powerful question: "We are more likely to help cute animals and protect their homes in the wild. The focus for this third entry in the series is on “cute” animals, starting with a great cover image showing the face of a pink axolotl.Among them are the axolotl of the title as well as the vibrant rosy maple moth, the pangolin, the dik dik, and the fennec fox, some of my favorites.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Like with the first and second books of Jess Keating's The World of Weird Animals series (like with her Pink is for Blobfish and What Makes a Monster? I wanted to make a book to get people interested in nature, but I also wanted to show how badly nature is doing. If you are unhappy with a product or dissatisfied within 14 days of your purchase we would be happy to give you a refund.

Descriptions are sufficient for kids but are not simplified and actually use larger words to be found in a glossary. Petranka approaches the subject of salamanders from a more ecological viewpoint, discussing their individual habitats in great detail. If you're having a bad day, I highly recommend looking up quokkas, flying dwarf squirrels, pygmy hippos, and fennec foxes. We believe it is essential to teach our kids to place themselves in the shoes of others beyond their communities, and instill in them a lifelong curiosity about the world and their place in it. To make the issue of climate change more global to young readers, and to avoid singling out Mexico, Bondestam opted for a setting that is less Mexico-centric and more universal.
