In 1880, Peek Freans' became the first factory in London to be supplied by electricity. Even Henry Mayhew — the philanthropist notorious for recording dismal Victorian working conditions — lauded the factory's atmosphere as "gauzy as a summer morning mist".

Lemon Zest:Lemon zest refers to the finely grated outer peel of the lemon. It contains fragrant oils that provide intense lemon flavor and fragrance to these lemon butter biscuits. Huntley & Palmers Cornish Wafers are still sold under the Jacob’s brand, and McVitie’s continue to manufacture Thin Arrowroots. Huntley & Palmers biscuits are still produced in New Zealand. In 1921, Peek Frean entered into an amalgamation agreement with rival biscuit firm Huntley & Palmers, resulting in the creation of a holding company, Associated Biscuit Manufacturers Ltd (ABM). [1] However, both biscuit firms retained their own brands and premises. Jacob's joined the conglomerate from 1961. English Biscuit Manufacturers (EBM) was established in Pakistan as a local joint-venture production company from 1965, which still owns the various brand rights in the country. [8]

Individual production and marketing strategies were maintained by the two companies. Factories were opened in Canada, the United States and Australia in 1949. The Reading factory employed 3,000 people in 1954.

Despite its sweeping global success, the company appears to have had a healthy, community-minded relationship with its employees. I thought I can't have another bit of Bermondsey disappearing, it's just ridiculous," says Magold, who is something of a historian of the surrounding area. Assorted biscuit cutters. Yet the lemon puff biscuit still has a tantalising nostalgic pull to it to me these days. Associated Biscuits had an 18 percent share of the British biscuit market in 1976. It was behind United Biscuits with 40 percent.

These Lemon Cream Puffs are exactly as light, flaky and airy as seen on the above photo. And the creamy filling is just to die for ! Garibaldi biscuits have also been around for over a century and have remained a popular choice for generations. These biscuits consist of soft currants sandwiched between two layers of crisp, golden pastry. They have a unique texture and flavour, and the combination of sweet and savoury makes them a biscuit that stands out from the rest. Today, the names or concepts would be completely unknown to younger generations. But to some of us growing up in a certain decade, they were everything we wanted when spotting them on the supermarket shelves. Split the baked pastries in half through the middle. Spread a portion of the filling onto the bottoms of each one and top with the top pastry bit, sugared side up. The Cornish Wafer was the highest-selling biscuit by 1954. Associated Biscuits concentrated on cream, savoury and assorted biscuits. The Lemon Puff was introduced from 1958.Peek Freans knew how to charm customers, too. There's a framed letter on the wall from the company replying to an agitated customer, apologising that her tin of biscuits was stale and offering a replacement. The letter also gently points out that next time she should perhaps avoid buying tins of biscuits that are six years out of date.
