When Athan Wilde’s mentor, Mr Chen, is brutally murdered, he rescues secret plans that should enable him to complete the old man’s spectacular flying machine. But Athan needs help and he’s not sure who to trust. Atense and imaginative historical thriller. The Book of Stolen Dreams is a powerful story that puts the heroes in danger almost constantly, yet still delivers a highly emotional and satisfying ending. Rachel lives with her older brother, Robert and their parents in the city of Brava in the land of Krasnia. Her father is a librarian and works in the North Brava Public Lending Library. When Rachel was just a baby, the Krasnia was taken over by the evil dictator Charles Malstain. He hated children and banned them from playing in public. Robert and Rachel have only ever known life under Malstains' cruel regime. The adventure is well thought out, set within a dark and oppressive land ruled by a dark dictator who hates children. There are parallels to be drawn with chapters in history as well as certain events in today’s world, painting a grim picture of life under highly restrictive rules and regulations. With almost every kind of fun being outlawed and teaching undertaken under very tight guidelines, Rachel and Robert still manage to be a beacon of light and hope throughout.

Not the story I was expecting... There isn't much of magic elements and the plot is about taking down a dictator. The children escape, but have to watch their father beaten by Malstain’s forces. They are subject to intimidation in their home as those under Malstain search desperately for the Book that the children vow to protect, though they don’t really know why. From the west? A charming area. Full of the best-dressed women.” He studied her. “And yet I sense in you a different spirit.” Her brother, Robert, was also provided with chapters set from his perspective. This was necessary as they remained apart for much of the book but his actions were still important ones. He was initially involved in more scheming and so I enjoyed learning about the plans for Malstain's demise from him. Nazi occupied Germany was an inspiration for Krasnia but I've gone a long way from there. It could be any country which has lived, or is living, under a cruel dictatorship. I hope it feels modern in some strange way. But, my dear—why do you look so sad? Is it the poor quality of the hot chocolate? No, I see now. Your parents aren’t here with you. You are alone. Where are they?”

The overall atmosphere was fantastic, it was easy to imagine all the quirky clothing, from people having penguin hats to pointy noses that looked like beaks, to legs of dictators that looked like carrots. And then, of course, there is the aspect of a library and a book, and if you're a bookworm, which I believe most of you reading this are, how could you not be interested in a bookish, magical, adventure. At the heart of the book is the theme of family; even when separated Robert and Rachel are always a team, looking out for each other and never losing sight of their goals. The idea of immortality is also an important part of the book, and leads to some very moving scenes as Rachel has to decide between what she really wants and what is best for the land of Krasnia. You haven’t heard from him? Do you know where he lives? You don’t even have a telephone number? Then how will you find him? Now don’t cry, I was only asking a question. Of course you will find him, even though Port Clement is a city of seventeen million people and he has no idea you’re coming. Why are you crying again? Here I am trying to cheer you up and I only make things worse! My problem, Isabella, is I speak before I think. My mother—a marvelous woman—was very critical of this flaw of mine. Forgive me.” Excuse me. I couldn’t help noticing you are alone. Please, my dear girl, you have no reason to fear.” The Book of Stolen Dreams is great. I think that anyone who loves to read should definitely read this book!

With a gorgeous cover like that and with the tile of The Book of Stolen Dreams I had high expectations for this adventurous middle grade novel. Unfortunately those were not at all met. David is known for his work on Spooks and his 2016 BBC adaptation of The Night Manager, starring Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston. The magic that was uncovered proved fascinating. I loved its slow introduction in the book and loved learning how it impacted the lives of these children. David Farr integrated it seamlessly into the story and I was engaged in all the different aspects that combined to make this a fascinating and fast-paced story. Farr’s beautifully crafted, thought-provoking story isn’t an easy-breezy read, but Farr is intimately acquainted with its stakes: The Book of Stolen Dreams was inspired by his own German Jewish family’s escape from Nazi Germany between 1935 and 1938. The novel grapples with tough, weighty questions: Is happiness possible under government oppression? When is a risk worthwhile? What do we owe our fellow citizens? Dramatic, full of twists and turns and a determined main character - I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to any Year 5 and 6 children!

David was born and raised in a small town in Surrey. His father is English and loves nature and his mother is a descendant of German-Jewish grandparents who helped their children escape Germany for England in the Second World War. No. I suspect you come from the poorer north of the city, from a family of artists. Your eyes are musical, and your nose gives me the strongest impression that you have a piano in your living room.” LoveReading4Kids exists because books change lives, and buying books through LoveReading4Kids means you get to change the lives of future generations, with 25% of the cover price donated to schools in need. How did the world develop for Krasnia - did you have any ground rules? Which part would you like to visit, if you could? Ab und an ein Kinderbuch muss auch mal sein, wenn man ein wenig leichtere Kost haben will. Und "Das Buch der gestohlenen Träume" war eine schöne, magische Geschichte, die durchaus sehr leicht von der Hand ging.As a screenwriter, whether it's for plays or films or TV, you're endlessly writing dialogue that will only be read by your colleagues. In novels there's only you. But in screenplays you write very much from a point of view so I used this to begin by writing from Rachel's point of view and kept at it. The Book of Stolen Dreams is David Farr's debut novel and is a story he has always wanted to write, and has always wanted to write for children. Courage, understanding and compassion’: Kiran Millwood Hargrave and Tom de Freston’s Julia and the Shark. Illustration: Kiran Millwood Hargrave /Tom de Freston My dear, listen to me very carefully. Your brother will find you—or you will find him. I promise you.” Rachel and Robert live a gray, dreary life under the rule of cruel and calculating Charles Malstain. That is, until one night, when their librarian father enlists their help to steal a forbidden book.

I am writing a companion novel set in the same vintage Krasnian world and again, about imagination and power. I like it because it's such a simple world for readers to escape into. Rachel will make a strong appearance in it and it's loosely about a ghost who gets lost. I'm hoping that my writing for young readers becomes part of my day-to-day work. So that was the personal inspiration for Robert and Rachel Klein and their journey away from the land of Krasnia. What they are not expecting is to discover a family of ghosts, a door to the dead and that the Book grants the power of immortality. But they will do anything to stop it falling into Malstain's hands - for if it does, he could rule for ever. Letta is a Wordsmith: responsible for handing out words to people who need them, she has never questioned why language is rationed. This post-apocalyptic thriller is full of jeopardy, nail-biting tension and some profound themes. The mix of characters here provides such wonderful possibilities. From the evil tyrant president who hates children and has turned a country into a wasteland, from the brave, smart, adorable kids like Rachel and Robert on a mission to save their father and the whole country, to a whole heap of side-characters that either made me giggle, or want to hug the book.
