More routined globetrotters than I was, they ask different questions, and reflect more on the radically changed technology and knowledge since the time of Phileas Fogg, whereas I had difficulties understanding the cultural codes in the world - which my children recognise directly from long experience in international schools. In the story, Phileas Fogg of London and his newly employed French valet Jean Passepartout, attempt to circumnavigate the world in 80 days by his friends at the Reform Club. It is one of Verne's most acclaimed works. And some people will tell you this book is slow-paced and weird. But they're forgetting something important.

Passepartout is appalled and, in a show of loyalty to his master, refuses to be complicit with Fix. Later, however, Passepartout relents, realizing Fix can help them get to London faster, which would help ensure that Fogg wins the bet. What I found fascinating about Around the World in 80 Days has nothing to do with the book itself, but rather how Jules Verne wrote it. When he was a young boy, according to accounts of relatives, he ran away from home and attempted to sail out to sea to follow the adventures of Robinson Crusoe. Having failed, he promised his mother that "henceforth I will travel only in dream." For the rest of his writing career Verne rarely traveled. Rather he would surround himself with books and research the landscapes of his novels without ever setting foot there himself. Meanwhile, London police officer Detective Fix has a theory that Fogg is actually the thief after hearing about Fogg’s wager, which has made news. Fix’s rumor gains traction throughout the public, especially since Fogg is so quiet and reserved and no one knows much about him. Fix is even more motivated by the reward offered for catching Fogg—2,000 pounds and 5 percent of the recovered money. Fix follows Fogg on his travels, the first stop being at Suez, Egypt, where Fix waits for a warrant for Fogg’s arrest to arrive.

Retailers:

Some people will tell you this book is not an adventure, and is in fact boring. But that's not true. Around the world in 80 days by Jules Verne was a really good classic novel an the story was filled with adventure, adrenaline and suspense. Verne spins a tale in which the reader will become so absorbed as to believe they are a part of the journey that must conclude in precisely 80 days. A master storyteller with the ability to captivate, entertain and provide some world history along the way, Verne deserves all the praises sung for him. Jules Verne is a favorite author from my childhood. I have been rereading some of his works and to be honest I've been left a little underwhelmed. Not so with around the world in 80 days! It's a 5-star read and most likely my favorite extraordinary voyages.
